Clean the room before you touch anything else
Background hum, air conditioning, laptop fans and street noise all get removed first. Every process after this one works better on a clean signal.
Level the speakers against each other
Two people on the same episode should sit at the same perceived loudness. Nothing makes a listener reach for the volume faster than a quiet guest next to a loud host.
Cut the dead weight
Long pauses, false starts, repeated questions and the throat clearing between thoughts. Not every filler word needs to go, but the pacing should never sag.
Mix, then master to a broadcast target
Music and intro beds sit under the voice, not over it. The final master lands at a consistent loudness so your episode does not jump when it plays after someone else’s show.
Listen on the worst speakers you own
Phone speaker, cheap earbuds, car stereo. Most of your audience is listening on something ordinary while doing something else.
